Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Pat Gordon, Jr. stands in front of a farm on some of the vast spans of prairie outside of the city. He walks through the fields of wheat that come up to his shoulders, finally reaching a clearing.
PGJR: “We’re just a week out, a week, from crowning the first ever Canadian X-Pro Heavyweight Champion. And there are only four of us left. So here we are, whittling it down to two right here in Calgary, one week before the grand finale of the Canadian Heavyweight Title Tournament.
“And my opponent for this week is a man with too many accolades to list, Chris Madison. Madison, to a guy like you, the Canadian Heavyweight Title might be just another decoration for your waist, just another addition to your already long list of nameless accolades to get lost in the shuffle. And that’s what’ll happen to it if you win it... It’ll be lost in the shuffle.
“But to me, I realize that a championship is only worth what the champion makes of it. And I plan to take that Canadian Heavyweight Championship, to represent this fine country with such an incredible history in our sport proudly, and to make this belt stand out. I plan to get in that ring, wage war with you, and be the one left standing when the dust cloud settles, holding my hand up high in victory. I plan to go on and either sail into battle with Johnny Moxie or get my rematch and tear the arena apart to exact my revenge on Dick Fury.
“See, Madison, while it’s true I haven’t been actively competing for very long, I’ve already earned my first big break. And when I got it, I seized the opportunity, beating Elijah Black and liberating the United Wrestling League World Heavyweight TItle from his its perch above his dusty mantle. And that’s what I plan to do with the Canadian Heavyweight Championship.
“Big break number TWO is waiting on the other side of you. And you’re a man who freely admits you’re no ideal champion. You’d probably just sit back and let the poor belt collect dust bunnies big enough to have movies on the SyFy channel about them. But me, I’ll take that belt to every province and territory in Canada. I’ll put the belt on the line against the Brett Starrs and Eric Steeles - the guys you took up the banner for because they signed their contracts too late to get in on this opportunity. And while you’re trying to carry that banner, I can’t help but to wonder if you’d grant them that same opportunity.
“I have big plans for the Canadian Heavyweight Title and for CX Pro. And those plans involve me fighting week in and week out to prove that I’m not only A worthy champion, but THE ONLY worthy champion. Those plans involve me making it through every great struggle, rising above every great challenge I can to make this belt mean something more than ‘Chris Madison’s one hundred thirty-second championship reign.’
“And as for thanking you for the main event exposure, like you said over the Twitter... I’ll thank you in that ring tomorrow night. I’ll thank you for being my opponent in my second main event since coming to Canada. I’ll thank you for being the guy that each and every person in that Calgary crowd came to watch tap out to the Pat Lock II. Because that’s what they want to see, Chris. They aren’t buying those tickets for the Max Bell Centre tomorrow night to see you win. They’re coming because they want to see you tap.
“If you know me, you’d know I’m a crowd pleaser. Sure I may not be as intriguing as Dark Spyder IV. I may not be as flashy as Dick Fury. And maybe I don’t have a personality as crazy as Mr. Rottentreats. But at the end of the night, I give the fans what they really want to see. A great fight. And when it’s all said and done, the fans remember that Pat Gordon, Jr. is a guy who can get the job done.
“They also remember he’s a guy they could relate to. Someone who’s walked a mile in their shoes. Someone who came from the same place, faced the same struggles. They know that if I can walk out there and beat a guy like Chris Madison, with all of his accomplishments and experience in this sport, then they can do what they need to do in order to face the day, get through the week, and even make it to the next damn month. They know that if I can win the big title, they can conquer their obstacles, too.
“That doesn’t mean you should make the mistake of thinking I’m just some Joe Schmoe nobody off the street, Madison. And I can tell that you do. I grew up around this sport from as young an age as you did. Don’t forget that my old man used to wrestle. And while he couldn’t hand me everything on a silver platter the way your boy Dick Fury’s family seems to have done, my father did give me something very important. He gave me tools, Madison. My father gave me a strong work ethic. He gave me knowledge of this sport. And he gave me the chance to interact with a lot of the greatest wrestlers this sport has ever seen back in those locker rooms after he got done wrestling.
“You’re arrogant, Madison. You think this is gonna be easy, one of your regular Sunday strolls through Central Park. And if you keep thinking that, you’ll have no choice but to Snap... OR TAP!!!”
The Boston Bruiser disappears back into the fields.
